Sleep & Circadian Rhythms

Dr. Helen Burgess is a Professor of Psychiatry and Co-Director of the Sleep and Circadian Research Laboratory at the University of Michigan.

Her research examines basic sleep and circadian rhythm mechanisms as well as sleep and circadian rhythms in the context of various clinical disorders including alcohol use disorders, autism, bipolar disorder, chronic pain, depression, diabetes, gastrointestinal disorders, HIV, jet lag, migraine, shift work, sleep disorders and PTSD. She also studies how light and melatonin can be used to improve sleep and circadian adaptation to help optimize health and relieve symptom burden.

She has developed a method to facilitate accurate measurement of circadian timing in the home environment with appropriate measures of compliance.

At the invitation of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, Dr. Burgess assisted in formulating the latest clinical practice guidelines for the treatment of circadian rhythm sleep-wake disorders.

Dr. Burgess received her PhD from the University of Melbourne, Australia, and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of South Australia and second fellowship at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago.

Michael Grandner, PhD, MTR, DBSM,FAASM, FAHA, FSBSM

Dr. Michael Grandner is the Director of the Sleep and Health Research Program at the University of Arizona, Associate Director for Behavioral and Translational Science at the Center for Sleep, Circadian and Neuroscience Research and the Director of the Behavioral Sleep and Circadian Medicine Clinic at Banner - University Medical Center in Tucson, AZ. Dr. Grandner is also a Professor of Psychiatry, Psychology, Medicine, Nutritional Sciences, and Clinical and Translational Sciences at the University of Arizona.

In his work, Dr. Grandner specializes in transitional sleep research and behavioral sleep medicine, studying the treatment of insufficient sleep and sleep disorders through behavioral and other non-medication interventions including nutritional supplements. Dr. Grandner also focuses on downstream cardiovascular, metabolic, immunologic, cognitive, mental, and behavioral health outcomes associated with sleep and as well as upstream social, behavioral, environmental, and biological determinants of sleep and circadian health.

Dr. Grandner received his PhD in Clinical Psychology at the University of California San Diego and San Diego State University. He also completed postdoctoral fellowships in behavioral sleep medicine and sleep and circadian neurobiology at the University of Pennsylvania and Philadelphia VA Hospital. He then completed a Masters degree in Translational Research at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. He is an elected fellow of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, the American Heart Association, and the Society of Behavioral Sleep Medicine.

Stephanie Stahl, MD, FAASM

Dr. Stephanie Stahl is Medical Director at Indiana University Health Indianapolis Sleep Laboratory, Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine and Clinical Neurology and Director of the Sleep Medicine Fellowship Program at Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis, IN.

Her research focuses on the evaluation and management of sleep disorders, including obstructive and central sleep apnea, parasomnias, and sleep-related movement disorders; hypoglossal nerve stimulation; negative effects of obstructive sleep apnea in stroke risk and recovery; and REM sleep behavior disorder.

Dr. Stahl completed medical school at Indiana University School of Medicine. She also completed an internal medicine internship at St. Vincent Hospital, Neurology residency at Indiana University School of Medicine and a Sleep Medicine fellowship at the Indiana University School of Medicine. Currently, she serves on several national committees, including Co-Chair of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine's Sleep Inter-Scorer Reliability Gold Standard Panel, Chair of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine's Education Committee, and Lead Co-Chair of the Purdue Alumni Medical Network Board.

Chris Winter, MD, DABSM, DABPN, FAASM

Dr. Chris Winter is the owner of Charlottesville Neurology
and Sleep Medicine (CNSM) clinic and CNSM Consulting. He is the author of two books: The Sleep Solution: Why Your Sleep Is Broken and How To Fix It as well as The Rested Child: Why Your Tired, Wired or Irritable Child May Have A Sleep Disorder--And How To Help, hosts the Sleep Unplugged with Dr. Chris Winter podcast and is the host of the Sleep.com series Sleeping Around with Dr. Chris Winter.

His current research focuses on sleep and athletic performance, and he
works with numerous professional sports organizations to help athletes
optimize sleep. He's credited with coining the term circadian advantage
after studying the effects of travel on Major League Baseball teams.

Dr. Winter received his medical degree from Emory University, completed
his neurology residency as Chief Resident at the University of Virginia and his Sleep Medicine fellowship at the University of North Carolina in Chapel
Hill. He is board certified in sleep medicine by the American Board of Sleep Medicine, board certified in neurology by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, and a
diplomate of both organizations. He is also a fellow of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.

Emily Ho, PhD

Micronutrients, Nutrient-Gene Interactions & Metabolism

Dr. Emily Ho is the OSU Distinguished Professor of Nutrition in the College of Health at Oregon State University and the Endowed Chair and Director of the Linus Pauling Institute, a research institution promoting optimal health through research of phytochemicals and essential micronutrients.

Dr. Ho’s research focuses on understanding the mechanisms by which nutrient status and healthy foods affect the initiation and/or progression of chronic diseases. Her work has helped drive dietary requirements and recommendations for micronutrients such as zinc for communities with susceptibility to poor nutrition, and she has interest in phytochemicals derived from cruciferous vegetables in cancer prevention. She has strong commitment to engaging and facilitating nutrition and diet-focused translational research projects with basic scientists, clinicians, policy-makers and communities.

Dr. Ho received her PhD in Nutrition Sciences from Ohio State University and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of California, Berkeley.

Luca Tiano, PhD

Dr. Luca Tiano is a full Professor of Biochemistry in the Department of Life and Environmental Sciences at Polytechnic University of Marche (UNIVPM) in Ancona, Italy and is a board member of the European Society for Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology and of the International CoQ10 Association.

Dr. Tiano has been consulted as an expert for various industries, including biotechnology, food supplements, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals. His main research concerns the health effects of lipophilic cofactors (Coenzyme Q10 and Vitamin K) and on the bioavailability and biological effects of vitamins and antioxidants in nutritional supplements and functional foods, with a special focus on cardiovascular health, muscle function and sarcopenia, and skin photoaging.

Dr. Tiano received his PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Camerino in Italy.

Kimberly Capone, PhD

Microbiome Science & Consumer Health Innovation

Dr. Kimberly Capone is the Founder & Principal Scientific Innovation Advisor at Capone Consulting Group and a Chief Science Officer specializing in microbiome science, clinical translation and evidence-based consumer health innovation. She helps wellness, personal care, biotechnology and consumer health companies translate emerging science into scientifically grounded products, claims and innovation strategies.

Previously, she founded the Microbiome Platform at Johnson & Johnson across Baby, Beauty and Oral Care, directing global clinical studies, shaping scientific strategy for flagship brands and conducting landmark research that helped establish the scientific foundation for microbiome-safe formulation worldwide.

She also holds multiple patents in microbiome-based technologies for therapeutic and personal care applications. Dr. Capone received her Ph.D.in Immunology and Microbial Pathogenesis from Northwestern University in Chicago, IL.

Joseph Petrosino, PhD

Dr. Joseph Petrosino is the Chief Scientific Innovation Officer (CSIO) at Baylor College of Medicine (BCM), where he is also professor and chairman of the department of Molecular Virology and Microbiology and director of the Alkek Center for Metagenomics and Microbiome Research (CMMR). He also holds appointments in the Dan L. Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center, the department of ophthalmology, and the Human Genome Sequencing Center at BCM. 

Dr. Petrosino was a principal investigator for the NIH Common Fund Human Microbiome Project, and he established the CMMR in 2011 to develop and implement advanced technologies to understand how the microbiome impacts health and disease and translate this knowledge into new therapeutics and diagnostics. Dr. Petrosino's lab specifically focuses on how microbiomes relate to gastrointestinal health, infectious diseases, and metabolic disorders (such as studying susceptibility and triggers for Type 1 diabetes). Over the past 20 years, the Petrosino laboratory has elevated the understanding of how the microbiome impacts numerous diseases.

Dr. Petrosino received his PhD from Baylor College of Medicine as well as his postdoctoral training in the Department of Molecular and Human Genetics.

James Brooks, PhD

Nutrition & Formulation

Dr. James Brooks is an Adjunct Professor of Food, Nutrition and Packaging Sciences at Clemson University in Clemson, SC. Dr. Brooks serves as the Principal for JR Brooks Consulting, LLC and is the current Chairman of the Expert Committee for Food Ingredients (Food and Chemical Codex), with the U.S. Pharmacopeia. He also serves on the Council of Experts for the U.S. Pharmacopeia (2025-2030 cycle).

He has over 40 years of food science, nutrition and agricultural industry experience. His most recent industry position was Executive Vice President for global R&D, Quality and Technical Operations at the Shaklee Corporation where he led research and quality efforts related to clinical research, product and process development for nutritional supplements, foods, personal care products and “green” household products.

Dr. Brooks received his PhD from Clemson University.

Khoshal Latifzai, MD

Dr. Khoshal Latifzai (Dr. K) is the founder and Medical Director of Rocky Mountain Regenerative Medicine who specializes in regenerative medicine, stem cell therapy, longevity medicine and extensive biomarker interpretation, drawing on his Emergency Medicine background to provide minimally invasive solutions for pain, injury recovery and comprehensive health optimization.

He currently serves elite and amateur athletes as well as busy professionals seeking to preserve and enhance their vitality.

Dr. K graduated from Dartmouth Medical School with a residency at Yale University in Emergency Medicine where he realized that preventing chronic disease and maximizing lifelong wellness could make as much difference as life-saving procedures in the ER.
