Jarrow Formulas Announces a Line Extension of its Methyl B12/Methyl Folate Lozenge
LOS ANGELES – January 31, 2017 - Jarrow Formulas® announces a line extension for the popular Methyl B-12 & Methyl Folate lozenge initially released last year. The new item will feature the same effective combination of coenzyme B vitamins but in a great tasting cherry flavored lozenge.

Dosage for the new lozenge is:

  • B12 - 5000mcg (as methylcobalamin)

  • B9/folic acid – 800mcg (as 5-methyltetrahydrofolate/5-MTHF)

  • B6 – 2.5mg (as pyridoxal-5-phosphate: P5P)

Bioactive coenzyme forms of B vitamins are preferred since they do not require conversion for activity, thus enhancing efficacy.*

  • Bioactive methyl-B12 is better absorbed and retained in the body vs. cyanocobalamin, a cheaper, synthetic vitamin B12 form that requires multiple enzymatic reactions for bioactivity.*

  • The glucosamine salt form of 5-MTHF (Quatrefolic®) has enhanced water solubility and bioavailability compared to folic acid as well as the previous versions of 5-MTHF as the calcium salt. Unlike folic acid, 5-MTHF does not require multiple enzymatic reactions for bioactivity. The liver’s ability to convert folic acid – a synthetic not found in nature – to active forms is limited.

  • Vitamin B6 naturally occurs in 6 forms, but P5P is preferentially utilized by the body as the only biologically active form, whereas all other forms must be converted to P5P.*

Vegetarians/vegans and those over the age of 50 may have an increased benefit from this formula.*

The previously released formula provides 1000mcg, 400mcg, and 1.5mg of B12, folic acid (5-MTHF), and B6, respectively.

"This product was formulated as a convenient lozenge to provide three highly synergistic B-vitamins readily utilized in the body," says Sky Garmon, Jarrow Formulas Marketing Associate. "A significant portion of the population is limited in the capacity to convert cyanocobalamin and folic acid to methylcobalamin and 5-MTHF, respectively. Other factors such as age and liver function can also influence conversion efficiency, which is why supplementation with active coenzyme forms as methyl-B12 and methyl-folate is superior and preferred," says Anthony Thomas, Ph.D., Jarrow Formulas Technical Scientific Support.
