Jarrow Formulas Announces the Release of a new Methyl B12 / Methyl Folate Lozenge

Jarrow Formulas Announces the Release of the new Methyl B12 / Methyl Folate Lozenge

LOS ANGELES – August 2, 2016 - Jarrow Formulas® announces the introduction of a lozenge formula consisting of Methyl B-12 & Methyl Folate plus P5P (vitamin B6). The new lozenge features biologically active forms of vitamins B12 (as methylcobalamin - 1000mcg), B9/folic acid (as 5-methyltetrahydrofolate/5-MTHF - 400mcg), and B6 (as pyridoxal-5-phosphate: P5P - 1.5mg), which work synergistically to support critical functions such as reducing homocysteine back to methionine. This formula may be particularly beneficial for vegetarians/vegans and those over the age of 50.* Coenzyme forms of B vitamins are preferred for their ability to produce reliable benefits.*

Bioactive coenzyme forms are preferred since they do not require conversion for activity, thus enhancing bioactivity and efficacy.*

  • Bioactive methyl-B12 is better absorbed and retained in the body vs. cyanocobalamin, a cheaper, synthetic vitamin B12 form that requires multiple enzymatic reactions for bioactivity.*

  • The glucosamine salt form of 5-MTHF (Quatrefolic®) has enhanced water solubility and bioavailability compared to folic acid as well as the previous versions of 5-MTHF as the calcium salt. Unlike folic acid, 5-MTHF does not require multiple enzymatic reactions for bioactivity. The liver’s ability to convert folic acid – a synthetic not found in nature – to active forms is limited.

  • Vitamin B6 naturally occurs in 6 forms, but P5P is preferentially utilized by the body as the only biologically active form, whereas all other forms must be converted to P5P.*

"This product was formulated as a convenient lozenge to provide three highly synergistic B-vitamins readily utilized in the body," says Sky Garmon, Jarrow Formulas Marketing Associate. "A significant portion of the population is limited in the capacity to convert cyanocobalamin and folic acid to methylcobalamin and 5-MTHF, respectively. Other factors such as age and liver function can also influence conversion efficiency, which is why supplementation with active coenzyme forms as methyl-B12 and methyl-folate is superior and preferred," says Anthony Thomas, Ph.D., Jarrow Formulas Technical Scientific Support.
