Jarrow Formulas Founder, Jarrow Rogovin, Sees Creation Of Office Of Dietary Supplement Programs As An Important Industry Milestone
LOS ANGELES - December 24, 2015 - The recent elevation from Division of Dietary Supplement Programs (DDSP) under the office of Nutrition Labeling and Dietary Supplements to the Office of Dietary Supplement Programs (ODSP) has created a buzz in the industry and among consumers. Raising the profile of dietary supplements within the agency [FDA] will provide more opportunity for government resources to effectively regulate the expanding industry.
Trade associations involved with dietary supplement industry welcome the change as do individual companies.
Jarrow Rogovin, founder of Jarrow Formulas Inc., stated "the elevation of the DDSP to ODSP from Division to Office of dietary supplements is an important development in the history of the industries regulation."
Jarrow further explained his reaction to the announcement:
"First, it should be the beginning of the end of the medias spin that the industry is 'unregulated.' The Office has created its own strong incentive to not just more rigorously enforce against outliers making illegal drug claims but the most serious offenders who are selling products with undisclosed drugs as ingredients. We expect the agency to seek more jail sentences for those offenders but, just as importantly, to publicize when its done."
Not content to sit on the sidelines during this period of change, Jarrow went on to explain "the industry also needs to coordinate its own list of priorities, such as when a published IND should be considered abandoned or irrelevant for purposes of an ingredient becoming a new dietary ingredient. I would also like to see the FDA coordinating with the US Trade Office on matters relating to trade barriers against American products. Regulatory agencies also have an responsibility to help the industries they regulate when appropriate and not just regulate us into oblivion."
As a company Jarrow Formulas is opposed to the idea of pre-marketing registration, even though this is not the same as pre-marketing approval. It is seen as an unnecessary expense, further bloating government and addresses no meaningful problem.
Jarrow, himself a long standing champion for the dietary supplement industry, sees this latest development as "an opportunity for the industry to acknowledge the political champions of DSHEA because the elevation of the agencies office is the fulfillment of DSHEAs visionaries, Senators Hatch and Harkin, Congressman Bill Richardson, and president Clinton who signed the bill." He also offered his congratulations to Acting Director of the Office, Robert Durkin and Deputy Director, Elkin at CFSAN.
